A Century Later, the Ghosts of War Still Haunt Europe
The horrors of World War I may seem like a distant memory, but for some in Europe, the remnants of this devastating conflict continue to pose a very real threat. As farmers till their fields and construction workers break ground, they sometimes encounter deadly reminders of a war that ended over a century ago.
In Belgium, the phenomenon known as the "Iron Harvest" is a grim part of everyday life. Each year, Belgian bomb disposal teams recover more than 150 metric tons of unexploded ordnance from World War I, remnants of the intense battles that once raged across the fields of Flanders.
